LOVE, Ladies Of Value and Excellence, is a mentoring group for adolescent girls.  The objective of LOVE is to help adolescent girls to transition into being productive young ladies through conflict resolution, counseling, peer modeling, community service, incentives and rewards, technology and media formats.  The mission of LOVE is to increase and positively influence the academic, social, personal success and development of adolescent girls.  LOVE provides young girls with strategies as they navigate all the struggles they may face while being a young adolescent female in today’s world.

The LOVE program at Allen Jay Preparatory Academy specifically caters to young girls grades 6-8.

Why Mentors Are Important

In order to ensure the successful transition of adolescents girls, mentors are needed.

Mentorship is a valuable development resource for women.  Mentorship is linked to career advancement in that the person receiving mentorship expects their mentor will provide useful guidance and developmental assistance that will enhance her career (Higgins and Kram, 2001). Conversely, women who lack mentorship experiences have careers associated with unfavorable outcomes such as diminished job performance, restricted careers, an absence of role models (Noe, 1988).  We are all better, stronger, and more successful when proper guidance is provided.

The female teachers of the school are important participants in any LOVE program. They are needed to serve as mentors. A teacher who develops a relationship with her students is more effective and has more tools with which to motivate her students.  Mentorship with LOVE is a great way to affect academic and social change. Those who have a "willing spirit" are eligible to become mentors after training.  My experience has shown that the female teachers are committed to her female students and will contribute to her development.  I am proud to note that every female teacher with which I have ever worked has participated as a mentor, facilitated a lesson,  or workshop, or provided leadership in various ways.  They are the reason for LOVE's success.

MY passion And My Philosophy

I am zealous about LOVE for very personal reasons.  I had to learn to navigate my adolescent years without my mother, as she died from a long illness when I was ten.  Throughout the years, there were a lot of very strong, compassionate women who helped me along the way, and LOVE is my way of paying it forward.  Well-rounded, self-assured young ladies are more confident, more successful and greater contributors to the world. Because of these reasons, there will always be a service-learning component to the program and there will always be an avenue for the participating young ladies to help other young ladies as they develop into strong women.  My hope is that they, too, will pay it forward.

I believe that mentorship is important and it helps to build strong bonds that will have lasting effects in and out of the classroom.  Adolescent girls who are more confident, are better equipped to face the world.  Forming relationships and building futures will help with the overall learning process, making motivation easier to accomplish.  This growth mindset approach helps adolescent girls to accomplish more.

Technology plays a large role in the learning and development of an adolescent girl.  Images are pervasive, and impressionable kids are susceptible to believing what they see.  Visual forms become an increasing part of who we are, what we know, and how we interpret the world.  Indeed, images are everywhere, but it’s the interpretation of those images that affects the world in which we live. Our interpretation is directly linked to our own perspective which is largely based on our culture, overall background and our own outlook on the world. LOVE and its programs will help as these adolescent girls work to structure their confidence and combat these obstacles.
